Fascists executed his grandfather during the nations civil war, dumping his body in one of many mass graves that cover this serene landscape overlooking the southern Spanish city of Granada. For years, Galadi has sought to give his grandfather, a bullfighter, a proper burial. Now, he may soon have his chance. Sent by: Sudarsan Raghavan Photo Editor: |

She is standing next to a picture and bust of her uncle. The opening of Garcia Lorcas grave is the latest and most high profile effort by Spain to come to terms with its ugly past, which for decades was not openly discussed. As many as 114,000 Spaniards were killed or disappeared during the four-year conflict that pitted the rightist forces of Gen. Francisco Franco against an elected leftist government. India is planting bamboo saplings to use as a screen to conceal drains and slums as a way of showcasing the city as a clean capital, during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In the picture, two public works officials show the bamboo saplings (Abhishekh Raj (in white shirt) and S. A. Rohilla (shorter man)). New Delhi hopes the Commonwealth Games, in which 71 former British colonies compete, will bring the global limelight that the Olympics brought to Beijing last year. It mirrors Indias growing ambition to transform its cramped capital of 14 million people into a 21st century super-city that can hope to host future Grand Prix and Olympics. |

fo/baghdadnightlife 2/26/09 Andrea Bruce/TWP The government of Iraq has introduced a plan to ban smoking in public. The bill being presented to the Iraqi parliament by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's cabinet would rewrite Iraqi rules to ban smoking in ministry buildings, airports, company buildings, theatres, cinemas and schools. It is not clear if the ban would apply to waterpipes.
A hired dancer smokes hookah--something women rarely if ever do in Iraq--while breaking between songs. On this stretch of Iraq's famed Abu Nawas street, Baghdad feels more like Saigon these days jarring for what is still predominantly a conservative Muslim society. |

The two men were arrested in 2005, extradited to the US and spent just a few months there before pleading guilty to drug trafficking crimes and getting sent home. The two men have been back in Colombia since December of 2007 and getting their lives together. Critics have raised questions about why such people -- small fish on the periphery of the drug trade -- are getting extradited and not tried in Colombia. |
